"I didn't know so much could be taught and taught so well in only a weekend." - a 101 graduate.

The perfect class for the person who has maybe read a few survival books, maybe watched a bunch of YouTube survival videos, maybe binges on a fav survival reality TV show, or maybe a survival class from a bodacious bearded guy is on a bucket list. But, this person hasn't ever put their boots in the dirt and received hands-on outdoors survival training. For those who have camped maybe once or twice, or never at all. For those with a desire for increased wilderness confidence and a sturdy - did I say sturdy? - survival foundation.

What is there to learn in the 101?

A better awareness of preparedness and planning and the knowledge, skills, and techniques associated with Byron's seven survival priorities: Positive Mental Attitude. (PMA). Understanding giving-up and panic, the four major fears of a survivor, the role of faith, and the many stressors accompanying the physical and psychological aspects of survival. Wilderness First Aid. (WFA). Understanding the symptoms and  treatment of common injuries in the backcountry, such as snake bite, bleeding, ticks, chiggers, hyperthermia, dehydration, heat exhaustion, sprains and strains, and burns. Knowing that WFA is much different from a neighborhood 911. The importance of and how to put together a wilderness first aid kit. Shelter. The importance of shelter. Natural vs. man-made materials. How to construct an expedient, yet proper emergency action shelter. How to tie the overhand knot, square knot, the slip knot, butterfly knot, half-hitch, trucker's hitch, clove hitch, and sheer lash. How to use the buttoning technique for staking shelters. Fire. The nine reasons a survivor would have a fire. The fire triangle. Tinder, kindling, and  fuel. Selection and proper processing of materials. Effective use of a ferro rod. The importance of pitch wood. The platform and brace method to start a fire. The teepee and log cabin types of fire building. It's raining and soaking wet. What do I do now? Achieving a knee-high fire in two-and-a-half minutes using flint and steel. Signaling. How to achieve rescue - how to attract attention to yourself. The importance of a whistle and mirror. Volunteer rescue behavior. How to properly use a whistle and mirror to achieve rescue. The International Distress Signal. Signaling correctly using smoke and/or fire. Water. The importance of water in a survival situation. Locating water. Purifying and disinfecting water. Using commercial filters, such as the LifeStraw or Katadyn Hiker. Using commercial chemicals, such as iodine and chlorine dioxide. Boiling water. Using ultraviolet light. Oh, no. I've got amoebic dysentery. And, Food. Why bugs? What animals can one eat in the woods? And, how does one even begin to catch it?

Also. Short-term and long-term survival will be discussed. Contents of a personal survival kit will be explained. Improvisation and its creative aspects will be emphasized. And, class participants will become a team, stay safe, and have fun.
